Using Tweetimag.es to display custom Twitter avatars in Sprout

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Joe Stump, a former Digg PHP developer, is now doing side projects and came out with a service on top of the twitter API called Tweetimag.es.  This service makes it easier to pull Twitter profile images and in a way that prevents the image from breaking when a user changes their profile image.  It also makes it easier to pull multiple sizes of the profile images.  This got me thinking…how can we use this in Sprout Builder so that users can create custom Twitter sprouts with more flexibility.   After pinging some of the Sprout developers, there was a simple solution that made this possible.

What are users actually doing on Facebook?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Facebook recently announced that they’ve surpassed 300 million active users.  It is my understanding that “active users” means that they have logged into Facebook within the last month.  Another interesting statistic is that half of all users are logging in to the site on any given day.  The numbers don’t lie, Facebook is becoming the ubiquitous social network, and much to Mark Zuckerberg’s liking, a platform that is changing the way people communicate.

5 Facebook Fan Pages with Custom and Engaging Content

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Screen shot 2009-09-18 at 12.48.35 AMIn my last post about Facebook Fan Pages I walked you through the basic elements of a Fan Page and how each of those elements works.  One section of the post which is relatively open-ended is the section about additional content and applications.  This content is basically everything but the basic Facebook functionality (info, wall, photos, video).  Since it doesn’t fall under the norms and structure of standard Facebook content, you see a wide range in the variety of content.  In this post, I will feature 5 Fan Pages that are taking full advantage of this open-ended section of Facebook Fan Pages.  (All of the images below link to the actual tab that I am discussing for reference).

Dissecting a Facebook Fan Page

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

fan page diagram 1This is the first post in a series of posts about Facebook Fan pages. At this point, I hope you have come to understand that value of a Facebook Fan Page (also called a public profile, brand page, etc – but in my posts I will refer to them as “Fan Pages” or “Pages”).  The purpose of this post is to show the various elements of a Fan Page and the various properties to those elements.  I will use visuals and examples where needed. If you are keen to learn about Fan Pages but first need to learn the basics of Fan Pages, please spend a few moments reading Facebook’s Fan Page information.

Augmented Reality, interactive, interesting and engaging

Monday, July 27th, 2009

picture-5When I first read the term, augmented reality, it didn’t strike me as something that would be relevant in advertising.  I had to explore further to discover that this is one of most engaging forms of interactive advertising.  So what is augmented reality (AR) and how is it relevant to advertising?  AR is the act of taking a 2D physical object and then using a digital interpreter (computer equipped with a webcam) to create a 3D experience.  Who’s using this technology? big brands such as General Electric, interactive agencies such as Poke and soon iPhone applications.

Let’s take a deeper look at some of these applications.

Starbucks Discussions

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Like most marketers in the social media industry, I read the engagementdb report earlier this week. Winning the award for best social media score was Starbucks. With a team of six, Starbucks has successfully used social media to enhance its brand and its sales – A great testament to the power of conversations and viral marketing. With so many employees, Starbucks struggles with ‘many voice syndrome.’ Who should be allowed to blog, tweet and post in official capacities? The report says, “While Starbucks encourages designated employees to have a sense of ownership in customer engagement as experts on specific topics, the company is not yet endorsing a widespread engagement in social channels. This can sometimes be difficult as many of the employees — especially those who work in stores and are avid users of social media channels like Facebook and Twitter — chomp at the bit to engage.”

Using Sprout to Promote Documentary Films

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

btc_myspaceThere are a plethora of uses for Sprout Builder.  We have seen some very large companies using Sprout but we have also seen some of the smallest using our products.  What impresses us the most is when our users push the limits of our platform and leverage it flawlessly.  The work done by Johnathan Karol for the documentary film: Beyond The Chair is a perfect example.  I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Johnathan in my latest episode of Sprout Tips and Tricks.
